The sequel is currently filming and sees the return of Tom Cruise as Maverick and Val Kilmer as Iceman. While Lieutenant Commander Rick "Jester" Heatherly didn"t have a major part in the 1986"s Top Gun, it would"ve still been cool to see him back in the role after all of these years. As it turns out, Ironside thinks he knows why he wasn"t asked to participate in the sequel. As for the reasoning behind not getting a role in Top Gun 2, Michael Ironside believes it"s due to a communication breakdown with producer Jerry Bruckheimer. Apparently Ironside and Bruckheimer aren"t on the best of terms these days. Ironside had this to say about his current relationship with Jerry Bruckheimer and his involvement in Top Gun 2. "I"m not going to be in this film. The one person still in charge is Jerry Bruckheimer and Mr. Bruckheimer and I don"t really get along, or didn"t get along. He offered me a project 10 or 12 years ago and... I said no to it. " 68-year old Michael Ironside specializes in playing villains and tough guys, which was perfect for the Jester role in the original Top Gun. As it turns out, there might be more to the Jerry Bruckheimer story than just turning down a role. However, the actor doesn"t hold any ill will towards the producer. Ironside explains. "The next time I saw him at a hockey game... I went up and said, Hey Jerry and he just turned around and I figured, Well that relationship is over with. But he has a business he has to run, he has to make decisions based on his way of doing things and what makes him feel safe. " Michael Ironside isn"t the only original member of the cast that won"t be appearing in Top Gun 2. Kelly McGillis played Charlotte "Charlie" Blackwood in the first film and expressed interest in returning to do Top Gun 2, but she apparently was never asked to participate. Her character in the original film is based on a real-life person, Christine Fox, who worked at the Miramar Naval Air Station. Anthony Edwards jokingly said he"d return to play Ghost Goose, but that probably won"t happen, even though it would be pretty awesome. Michael Ironside won"t participate in Top Gun 2, but the actor is still excited to see the movie. Ironside likes that it"s going to deal with the end of dogfighting and the emergence of drone fighting. The actor likened drone warfare to almost playing a video game, noting that there"s no "emotional or spiritual responsibility for the taking of another life. " While that bit of the script hasn"t been officially confirmed, Ironside hopes that it will take that stance. Paramount ’s “ Top Gun: Maverick, ” a sequel to Tom Cruise’s 1986 classic, is the latest summer movie to vacate its release date as theaters remain closed to stop the spread of the coronavirus. The anticipated follow-up was scheduled to debut June 24 and will now release Dec. 23, 2020. As part of the release shake-up, Paramount has also moved “A Quiet Place Part II” — which the studio postponed last month — to Sept. 4, 2020. “The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run, ” an animated adventure based on the absorbent underwater fry cook, was originally slated to hit theaters on May 22 and will now bow July 31, 2020. Meanwhile sci-fi fantasy film “The Tomorrow War, ” previously scheduled for Dec. 25, 2020, is now undated. Those films join a growing list of tentpoles that were pulled from release because of the coronavirus pandemic and the subsequent closure of multiplexes. Sony recently delayed most of its summer slate, including “Morbius” and “Ghostbusters: Afterlife. ” In recent weeks, Disney postponed “Black Widow” and “Mulan, ” while Warner Bros. reshuffled “Wonder Woman 1984” and “In the Heights” and Universal halted “Minions: The Rise of Gru” and “Fast & Furious” entry “F9. ” By now, it’s clear that studios don’t expect theaters will reopen by mid-summer. Even if cinemas are able to turn lights back on by July, when “SpongeBob” is now set to release, exhibitors are wary about how eager audiences will be to return to normal activities, such as going to the movies, after emerging from the global health crisis. “Top Gun: Maverick” cost over $150 million to make, so Paramount is counting on massive ticket sales in order to turn a profit. The delay gives Paramount more time to roll out a massive global marketing campaign. That could have been more difficult if “Top Gun: Maverick” had tried to maintain its summer release date. Cruise is gearing up to star in the seventh “Mission: Impossible” movie — production in Europe was delayed when the coronavirus hit Italy. This will allow him to shoot that sequel and participate in the “Top Gun: Maverick” campaign. Cruise, over 30 years after the first film, reprises his role as Pete “Maverick” Mitchell in “Top Gun: Maverick. ” In the sequel, Cruise returns to flight school to train Top Gun graduates for a specialized mission. Val Kilmer will reprise his role as Maverick’s rival Iceman, while Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm and Glen Powell joined the cast. “The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run” sees best friends SpongeBob SquarePants and Patrick Star venture out of Bikini Bottom and head to the Lost City of Atlantic City on a rescue mission to save SpongeBob’s trusty snail Gary. It’s the third theatrical “SpongeBob” film after 2004’s “The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie” and 2015’s “The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water. ” Both were commercially successful, earning over $450 million globally combined. Top Gun: Maverick sees him revisit brilliant but reckless pilot Pete "Maverick" Mitchell, still flying but unable to to let go of his past. The trailer shows Cruise apparently pulling off some incredible aerial moves on board a US Navy jetfighter. "Everything you see in this film is for real, " he told the San Diego audience. "We"re working with the Navy, all of the flying you see in this picture is real, I really wanted to give you all an experience of what it is to be inside that aircraft. "To me, Top Gun is about competition, it"s about family, it"s about sacrifice, it"s about heroism, it"s about aviation. "It"s a love letter to aviation. " Released in 1986, Top Gun was apparently inspired by an article titled Top Guns published in a magazine three years earlier. The film, directed by the late Tony Scott (Ridley Scott"s brother) was widely praised for its cinematic achievements in capturing breathless action sequences. It won an Academy Award for best original song for Take My Breath Away by the band Berlin. Cruise was 24 in the original film released in 1986 It made a star of Cruise and also featured Kelly McGillis, Meg Ryan, ER"s Anthony Edwards and Val Kilmer - who is also back for the sequel but is not seen in the first trailer. Its critics said the film served as a glorified jingoistic recruitment tool for the US Navy but in 2015, the US Library of Congress selected the film for preservation in the National Film Registry. "Thirty-four years ago I made a movie in San Diego, " Cruise told the Comic-Con audience following a panel to launch the latest film in the terminator franchise, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Linda Hamilton. "Thirty-four years and you"ve been very patient with me and I felt it was my responsibility to finally really deliver for you. " His Dark Materials Elsewhere, the first full trailer for the BBC"s adaptation of Philip Pullman"s His Dark Materials was screened for fans. It"s the first TV production of His dark Materials though it has been adapted for the stage and the big screen Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, who plays the aeronaut Lee Scoresby, was joined by his co-stars Dafne Keen, James McAvoy and Ruth Wilson for a panel and said he jumped at the chance to be in the series. "I didn"t even know what the part was, I would have sharpened pencils for this, " he said. "I"m a huge fan of the books. When my wife and I started dating we read these books "re in a really special place in my heart. " The series will be shown on the BBC and on HBO later this year. A film version made in 2009, starring Daniel Craig and Nicole Kidman, flopped at the box office. "TV has become the place where you can really explore story and drama, as well as the big fantasy, said Wilson, who plays the mysterious Mrs Coulter. "(TV) is not the poorer sister anymore. It"s actually where you can spend more time in storytelling and they have the money now to create the scale on which film used to be on. " Terminator: Dark Fate Shortly before Tom Cruise crashed the Terminator party, the stars of the next film in the Terminator franchise were talking to fans about returning to their iconic roles in the new film directed by Tim Miller. "I gave it careful consideration because I felt the first two were very intact, " admitted Hamilton whose last appearance was in 1992"s Terminator 2: Judgement Day. "And you kind of want to retire a champion. "I was intrigued by the passage of time, the character is the same but time changes everything. " Paramount Pictures Linda Hamilton is back as Sarah Connor in Terminator: Dark Fate Although the film"s producer James Cameron wasn"t there in person because he"s filming the new Avatar films, he appeared via video link. He said he agreed to another Terminator film because Hamilton and Schwarzenegger were on board. "I"m addicted to Terminator, " joked Schwarzenegger. "It launched my action movie career and helped create the 80s and 90s action genre. " The film is considered by the cast and filmmakers as a sequel to the first two films - rather than the three which followed - in which we see a new advanced Terminator chasing down another young target. It"s out in November. Avengers video game Since Marvel Studios wrapped the latest phase of the MCU up with Avengers Endgame (and Spider-Man Homecoming) this year, there is huge anticipation for what fans will get next.
